Code You Did Not Write: a practitioner’s guide to technical direction in the age of AI

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

San Diego, CA – Mar 29, 2026 – Author Sergey Nosov announced today the publication of Code You Did Not Write: The Discipline of Technical Direction in the Age of AI. The book treats technical direction—specifying work, reviewing output, and maintaining architectural coherence—as a unified discipline applicable to both human contributors and AI agents.

Every developer who reviews a pull request, evaluates AI-generated code, or specifies a task for another contributor is practicing technical direction. AI coding assistants have accelerated the shift from writing code to directing it: developers who once wrote most of their code now spend more time specifying and reviewing work they did not write. Existing books address parts of this work—delegation, code review, staff engineering, AI-assisted workflows—but none unifies them into a single discipline.

Thirteen chapters across five parts progress from individual technique to systemic thinking. The book opens with matching the depth of oversight to the risk of each change, moves through specification and review as two halves of one feedback loop, covers architectural stewardship when multiple contributors are changing a system at once, and closes with the recursive challenge of directing people who are themselves directing others.

The principles are language-agnostic and tool-independent, written for senior individual contributors and tech leads who still ship code and now direct work produced by humans, AI, or both. Both paperback and Kindle editions are available on Amazon worldwide. The Kindle edition is enrolled in Kindle Unlimited.

About the Author

Sergey Nosov is a software engineering lead based in San Diego, California, with three decades of experience spanning finance, government, biotech, energy, and field services. He is the author of eight books, including Configuring Windows 2008 R2 Web Server and the six-book Software Development Principles series, which distills 492 principles of software design, architecture, and engineering practice. His latest, Code You Did Not Write, draws on years of directing contributors—human and AI alike—to offer a practical guide to the work that sits between writing code and being responsible for it.
